Support the Clubs

Volunteering and Internships

Each year, many volunteers provide essential help to the Boys & Girls Clubs of the San Luis Valley, by mentoring Club members, volunteering on an advisory board, assisting with special events, or providing administrative support:

Volunteers are the backbone of most non-profits. Our organization is no exception. Without a wide range of volunteers, we would be unable to serve the youth of our Valley in the myriad of valuable ways we do. Typically, volunteers fall under one or more of the categories below:

Program Volunteers work with young people in our Clubs. The possibilities are endless! All Club Program Volunteers will be asked to:

  • Attend a comprehensive, 6-hour volunteer orientation and training
  • Pass a background check to ensure volunteer suitability
  • Work in our Clubs a minimum of two hours per week.

Expert Volunteers offer their professional expertise to our programs and Club. For example, someone who volunteers their time as a Wildlife Refuge expert may create and present a program for our youth. Or perhaps, someone who possesses expertise in Information Technology will help maintain our information systems. Whatever your expertise, you can contribute to our organization!

Administrative Volunteers help out with clerical or administrative tasks, like mailings, filing or website maintenance. These volunteers still need to pass a background check and attend a volunteer orientation and training.

Special Event Volunteers help set up and staff fundraising events throughout the year. Helping with a special event is an excellent way to get involved if you cannot commit to an ongoing volunteer project. We always need help getting donations and staffing the Masquerade Ball!

One Day Event Volunteers assist in a variety of ways. Typically, they do not work with our children and youth. Rather, they ask the Club staff what the Club needs - e.g., painting, cleaning, etc. - and then complete the tasks. Often, college students will do this while at Welcome Week or during Spring Break.

Interns are a little different than volunteers. While they are volunteering their time, they also receive college credit for their work. Typically, interns work at the Club 8 - 15 hours per week. They are required to work a minimum of 8 hours at the Club, pass a background check, create a learning contract, and attend supervisory meetings with the Director of Diversity and Volunteerism.

Community Advisory Boards are composed of people in the communities of our Clubs that work to support the Club in their community through fundraising, marketing, and helping the Club grow in terms of sustainability and programming.

For more information on how to become a volunteer contact Mary Robertson at 719.589.6361 or e-mail at maryr@bgcslv.org.

The Endowment Campaign

We believe the only way to ensure sustainability for our Clubs is to build an endowment.  Our endowment has increased considerably since last year’s House party of $3,000 to $67,000.  We hope to raise $3 Million dollars over the next 3 years, which could provide $150,000 per year in operational funding for the Club.

To make a donation to the Endowment Campaign, contact us at 719.589.5252, or you can make a secure online donation using PayPal by clicking on the button below. Please designate the Endowment Campaign in the "Message" box when you make your donation through PayPal.

Boys & Girls Club Friends Park

We recently received a grant from Great Outdoors of Colorado to build a beautiful new park next to the Alamosa Club.  This park will be open to all in the San Luis Valley.  In order to make our match for the two planned phases we will need to raise $90,000.

Please speak directly with Mary Robertson at 719.589.6361 or maryr@bgcslv.org, or one our Board of Directors regarding the need in this area.

David Rooney Park Memorial

David Rooney, a former Board Director who is deeply missed will be honored in an area of our new park.  A donation in his name is a nice way to honor his hard work and dedication to the BGCSLV.  The seed money to plan the park was gathered during a memorial bike ride in David’s honor.

To make a donation to the David Rooney Park Memorial, contact us at 719.589.5252, or you can make a secure online donation using PayPal by clicking on the button below. Please designate the David Rooney Park Memorial in the "Message" box when you make your donation through PayPal.

Donate a Car...and Help a Child Succeed

Your donation helps us to accomplish our mission of helping kids make the most of their lives. However, there are also many benefits for you:

  • You will receive a full fair market value of you donation as a tax deduction.
  • You won't have to buy a newspaper ad or deal with buyers coming to your home
  • You can avoid repair bills on a vehicle that needs extensive or expensive work
  • We'll pick up the vehicle. Towing is absolutely free!

Your Donation Really Helps Kids
Unlike many organizations, we operate our own auto donations program contracting with a for-profit company. Kids benefit from your donation-not a middleman. Many organizations receive less that 20% of the revenue generated from the sale of donated vehicles. At the Boys and Girls Clubs of the San Luis Valley, all the money raised (usually the wholesale value) is used to support the organization's mission to enable all young people, especially those from disadvantaged circumstances to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens.

A Program with Roots in the Community
We have been accepting vehicle donations since 2003. We have a strong relationships with auto shops, dealers, and community members who continue to send other auto donors our way.

We Make Car Donations Easy!
Donating a car is as easy as one, two, three:
  1. Call 719-589-5252, with vehicle information.
  2. Bring the vehicle and title to our office or we can arrange a time to pick the vehicle and signed title.
  3. You will receive a receipt you can use to claim your tax deduction for automobiles with a value of less than $5,000. Otherwise you will need to get an appraisal from a dealer.

Most vehicles are sold to auto dealers or community members to raise money for the programs of the Boys & Girls Clubs of the San Luis Valley. Some are retained for Club use.
